About PSG Community Radio Station

PSG Community Radio 107.8 MHz is whirling the air as Coimbatore’s first Community Radio which is being operated from PSG College of Technology, an Institution of Academic Excellence. This Community Radio was initiated by Shri G.Rangaswamy, Managing Trustee, PSG & Sons Charities Trust and Shri C.R.Swaminathan, Chief Executive, PSG Institutions under the stewardship of Dr.R.Rudramoorthy, Principal, PSG College of Technology with an aspiration to bring out the exclusive talents that was buried within the pupils pursuing their academic learning and to provide the society better and accurate information. Submission of the application for setting up the community radio to the Ministry of Information & Broadcasting took place during September 2005 which in turn issued the Letter of Intent (LOI) in September 2006. In January 2007,WPC assigned 107.8 MHz as the frequency to PSG Community Radio. Grant of permission of Agreement (GOPA) was signed between the PSG CT and the MIB during October 2007. The official inauguration of the PSG Community Radio 107.8 MHz was held in December 2007 broadcasting shows between 6:00 to 8:00 in the morning and evening(IST).

Station Facilities

PSG Community Radio has excellent facilities that provide a good ambience to work. The station is about 1500 square feet comprising of a Discussion-cum-Recording Studio, an Editing Suite, a Transmission Booth and a Live-Studio. The equipment required for maintaining the station is procured from Bharat Electronics Limited, Bangalore. The field-based outdoor broadcast recording is done utilizing a TASCAM DR-01 Digital recorder and two Lap-top computers. PSG Community Radio 107.8 MHz has proved to acquire a special place in the listener's heart with its uniqueness of broadcasting interesting and informative programmes. The triumph of PSG CR can be known from the Report of the Base Line Survey conducted by Commonwealth Educational Media Centre for Asia, New Delhi in May 2009 which states the testimony to the popularity of PSG Community Radio with its reach to 24 per cent of the Coimbatore population in its coverage area. Keeping in mind the guidance of the CEMCA, PSG CRS not only brought young minds into action and the privilege of servicing the society, it has also extended its hand in the paving path to the underprivileged sections a better learning experience. PSG CRS plays a major role in disseminating vital information on Community Living, Government Projects, Primary Education and Community Health.

PSG CR plays an important role in providing students, a platform to expose their hidden talents by motivating them to follow the footprints of the achievers from different walk of life.

Sigaram Thotta Sigarangal

This program with its uncomplicated presentations, is greatly helpful for the students to comprehend the ideal management principles and practices. It also motivates them in implementing these practises in their own life.

Namadhu Bhoomi

This show addresses the scientific temperament among students, women and common people. The Rashtriya Vigyan Evam Prodyogiki Sanchar Parishad (RVPSP), Department of Science and Technology (DST), Government of India, New Delhi has got off the ground in the mission of popularizing and stimulating scientific temperament in the name of “NAMADHU BHOOMI”. PSG CR commenced broadcast of the 182 episodes serial programme from 15th August, 2010.

Magalir Neram

Improvement in life style of women is the need of every women who has been restricted to do so, especially widows and destitute. This show addresses the importance about the well-being of widows and destitues and aims in getting them their due rights in family and the society breaking all the half witted superstitious beliefs about widowhood and destitution and also gaining them economic security. This show tries to erase the problem of information lacking in women and providing them a light by sharing lots of tips on how to earn money from home by making handicrafts and recipes, saving their money and also discuss the problems of the working women and offering them solutions from the experienced women-folk. This show has received appreciation from the listeners and is one of the best shows in PSG CR. This show broadcasted re-marriage of a Christian-man and a widowed- Hindu-woman who both are specially abled. Adhering to Hindu rituals, it was solemnized by a Trust known as Sivamayam Samayam Educational Charitable Trust, Coimbatore at Sri Murugan temple in Peelamedu with the bridegroom tying sacred thread with a pendant of Cross to the bride. This revolutionary re-marriage took place on September 7, 2009. The broadcast took place on the same day which brought more essence of humanity in the society as people responded with a positive thought to the PSG CR on listening to the news and indeed showered their blessings to the newly-married couple. The Sivamayam Samayam Educational Charitable Trust wrote a letter of appreciation and heartfelt gratitude to PSG CRS for effectuating the broadcast and listeners act of bringing in a humane touch of happiness.
